A modern-day 22 Hornet?

Ever since reading about FN's 5.7x28mm cartridge, designed to replace the 9mm pistol cartridge for the Belgian military forces, I have been curious about its viability as a sporting cartridge. My theory was that what we have here is a modernized 22 Hornet with a stronger case that will take many mor...

Watch out. Low power jacketed rounds like to stick in the bore. If you shoot another round with a bullet stuck in the bore, it's bad business. Best not to shoot light jacketed loads. If you do, and it sounds funny one time, or you do not observe a bullet strike, don't shoot again before looking thro...

After all of the initial hoopla from being introduced died out, the reports about the .204 Ruger have been consistently positive over a fair period of time - a very good sign! I can't recall a single .204 horror story. I've never owned a .204, but judging by other folks' reactions, I would not hesit...

A Browning stainless stalker in .300 Win mag was the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. It would put three rounds out of a cold, clean barrel into 1/2", reliably and consistently. ( Federal 180 grn. premium loads ) I never made any bets, but I did amaze my friends and family with the thing. - It...

Armed home invasions are in the news here from time to time. I do not carry all of the time, but I do keep a 45 around for answering the door, and have handguns ready to go, hidden at opposite ends of the house. My Mossberg 500 12ga. is currently down for repairs, so I am depending more on the handg...

I've been using a Burris 2x handgun scope on my MkIII for a quite a while now, it goes on my walks around the farm with me, most mornings. I forget what I paid for it but whatever it was, it was a great deal. I am very happy with this scope. ( Click image to see it full-size. ) http://i239.photobuck...

I've been asked where I found the spin-indexer on sale for 29 bucks. - It was purchased from ENCO tools, about a year ago. At that time they were normally 39 dollars. I just looked the indexer I have up at the ENCO website and ( at this writing ) the same unit is going for around 50 bucks! The best ...

I used to load for a TC Contender in .357 magnum, using 296 powder and a Speer 180 grn FNSP rifle bullet. NOTE THAT THIS LOAD IS NOT RECOMMENDED! We would fill the case with 296, brush it off even with the case mouth - then crunch it down with the 180 grain flat-point spitzer. NOTE THAT THIS LOAD IS...

I once had a Marlin in 32-20 that was a sweet shooter. I would think that a .357 with .38 spl or Trail Boss loads would be very similar. Gotta really watch out for ricochets though, with the low velocity stuff. The 32-20 may have been a creampuff to shoot, but it did dispatch two large dogs that men...

Bolt Jeweling with 5c Spin-Indexer

I plan to jewel the bolt soon on a 98 Mauser I am working on. In a discussion forum I read about somebody using a 5c collet spin-indexer to jewel rifle bolts. I have spin-indexer, and know that it rotates 360 degrees in one degree increments. Here's the indexer I have, it cost me 29 bucks on sale. (...

I don't know if this is still true, but at one time there were .22LR combat matches, and modified S&W model 41's were quite popular for that purpose. I owned a model 41 at that time, and concluded that the only hope would be for me ( or a gunsmith ) to weld a small extension on the original part, th...

Colt made a great DA/SA auto, the "Double Eagle". A Double Eagle in 10mm is hard to beat. - An excellent design that never gained much popularity. I dunno why... Of all the 10mm autos I tried, it was by far the best of the lot. Traded mine off, to my lasting regret. They made them in .45 ACP as well...
