Storing powder?

Post by Hakaman » Mon May 06, 2013 10:17 am

How could I find out the legalities of keeping smokeless powder stored at my house? Primers, and loaded ammo as well?
thanks, haka

I don't think you will run into any legalities until you are in the tonnage range...... BATFE would be the place to look for that.

The only code is the Fire Code. If I recall it's 20# of powder if in the open. After that it needs to be in a cabinet with at least 1" thickness of wood. Primers need to be stored away from the powder.

Loaded ammo does not matter. So if you stock pile powder and primers just load them up to stay under the limit. :D

I need to sell off a little pistol powder. My basement is low humidity and cool.
I think you are right, 20lbs.

You can have more than 20# but it must be stored in a wood storage box. 20# is the max if in not in a box. A storage box is nothing more than a wooden box with a min 1" thick walls. So if you normally store it in a cabinet, just add another layer of wood all the way around.

Or you can just load up some ammo
