Model 617

Here are some pictures of the S&W Model 617 I took possession of today. If I didn't look at it closely, I'd swear it's the 686-6" 357 I was holding in my hand. Same weight, size, and appearance. The unique difference is the 10 cylinder, as compared with the 686 6 shot cylinder. The grips are slightly different, the finger notches are more pronounced on this gun. I also purchased a couple speed loaders from this fellow, a local michigander:

Nice shooter Haka, my shooting buddie has one of the older ones. His is a 6 shot andI am not sure what the bareel lengt is, he has a .38Sp.357Mag to match it.

You'll love it. The 617 is a great training aid because it is the size and weight of a K/L frame. New shooters can learn on this because it's full-size with no recoil. Good friend of mine also switches to his 617 if he is having problems shooting the 686 to figure out what he's doing wrong. Normally works, plus the are fun to shoot, accurate, and a lot cheaper.

I finally got the gun out to the range today, and it is a pleasure to shoot. DA is a little stiff, and I think I might eventually get a trigger job done.
If I didn't look at the cylinder, I could be fooled as to which S&W I had in my hand. My 686 and this 617 are identical in size, weight, and appearance.
This is a solidly made 22lr, that is fun and accurate shooting. I now have a host of fine shooting 22lr's to take into retirement:
Mark lll 6 7/8 target, Beretta Bobcat (fun), and now the S&W 617.

I use to shoot SA all the time, but now, actually prefer shooting DA over SA. My hand seems to steady the gun while shooting DA.

Hi Gents,

I also just picked-up a Model 617 the other day and just got back from the range trying it out for the first time. Nice gun indeed, but I must say I would really like to mount a red-dot on it.

Do any of you fellows know if there is rail made that would work? The top of the frame is already drilled and tapped for something.
