I've seen several sources that claim most .22LR reaches peak velocity from a ten-inch barrel. Would that make it possible that high velocity rounds could be supersonic from a 5 or 6 inch barrel?

The speed of sound is about 760 mph, or 1100 fps, at sea level; less at higher altitude.

Thanks, Ruger22. I now have the time to do things I want to do, and do intend to find the ideal ammo for my Savage (although, a 10/22 Target may be on the horizon). I got a part-time job as a range safety officer at my club, so will be out there more. So far, retirement is as advertised.

The only real way to know ammo velocity for your firearm is to chronograph the rounds. Generally you can expect about 90fps (+/- 10fps) decrease between the posted velocities and a 7" barrel.
