S&W Victory .22

I saw an S&W Victory at the grand opening of the new Cabela's in Richmond. My gun counter test fire was positive. Finish looked good. I liked the fire sights. Pretty good balance. Trigger seemed crisp. I liked the feel of the grips. Balance was good. Cabela's price was $399, just below list. It's prettier than my 22-A, is it better?

A note on Cabela's pricing. A friend who collects Savage lever actions said they had one with poor rebluing and a replaced barrel for $1900. He priced the rifle at no better than $1,200.

I looked over one good and It seemed well put together. I'm not sure about the filament sights as they are not really useful to me, others opinions may vary. $399 was the retail price over the counter on the stainless model I had a chance to examine. Beyond that I really cannot say as I did not get a chance to range test one of these new S&W pistols yet.

I've handled one. I liked it until I saw that while most of the frame IS stainless, the grip frame portion is polymer. Otherwise I might have considered buying one eventually. Just call me a dinosaur, I don't like plastic in my guns. I still think it will give Ruger's Marks some stiff competition.

I still like the Ruger better.

Having said that, I've been tempted by the Browning Buckmark pistols lately.

I have a Challenger and Buckmark Standard. Both shoot well. The standard is very accurate. I like them. Problem areas: The sight base screws come loose regularly if you don't use blue loctite. You can bend the recoil spring if you you aren't careful about how you disassemble. (Browning manual doesn't tell you to remove the slide for cleaning, just poke around in the chamber).
Positive: If you want a different barrel, darned easy to remove and replace.
Better trigger out of the box than a Ruger MK.

The Buckmark is always a good addition to your "arsenal" but I prefer Rugers.

Just watched 22 Plinkster's review of the Victory. Looks good.

One thing I'm wary of is that it has a sight base like the Buckmark. I have problems with the Buckmark's sight base staying tight without loctite.
