to Drill or Not to Drill ?

Post by toyfj40 » Tue Nov 22, 2005 2:00 am

... that is the question ...
I have a Pre-Factory-Drill-Tap Mark-II with the Adj.Sights
and would like to mount a 2x20 scope (maybe RedDot) on it.
My local GunSmith wants $20/hole to drill-tap.

I was looking at the Weigand rail mounts at rfSports:
RM2SM $40 and RM2FD $20

Does anyone have experience comparing these ?
1. does RM2FD use 4-holes EXACT same location as the
-- Ruger-factory-drill&tap+rail "compatible" ??
2. does the RM2SM hold-tight ? (I'm not extremely demanding)
-- just I don't want it to fall off each trip to the range.
-- (( I have a concealed-ScrewDriver-Carry permit ))
3. does the Adj.Sight go back into the dovetail "OK",
-- if/when I want to switch back and forth ?

4. Do the "Hogue Mk2 Grips (w/thumb Rest)" HG82060
-- mount as Two-Panels - like the original grips ?
-- or as a Wrap-Around ?
-- Do I have to remove them for a Field-Strip/clean ?
-- Do I need an Ext.Mag.Rlse and/or Ext.Bolt.Rlse ?

I put one of the Weigand sight slot mount rails on a friends untapped MK11 several months ago and it is still good and tight after a few hundred rounds.
It has a lock screw the same as the Ruger rear sight and should hold up under the .22 recoil.
The rear sight should be moved from left to right(looking from the rear of the pistol) to remove and reverse to install.
The Hogue grips are "wrap around" the front of the frame and not the rear and so do not have to be taken off to break the pistol down.
Only you can tell if you need the other parts. I have an extended bolt release on my Hunter and like it.
I also put an extended mag release on my friends MK11 and he loves it

I have a MGW no-tap mount on my Mark I and it is similar to the Weigand. It stays very secure and I like having the scope on the pistol. Removing the rear sight can be a chore. Usually the sight fits very tight in the dovetail slot. Reinstalling the rear sight isn't something that you want to do on a whim, there's some adjusting to get it into the right position. The sight still fits in the slot tightly and takes some coaxing to get into place, not an easy switch back and forth swap. The grips feel great and do not need removing when field stripping.

As long as the mounting screws stay tight, it should work fine. I'd be careful while sliding it onto a blued finish receiver because it could marr the finish.
