Shooting for fun

Post by Mr. Nail » Sat Apr 10, 2010 7:41 am

Theres nothing like shooting my big guns-.270 and 7mm mag.- but every once in awhile I pull out the old Marlin .22. Its bolt actioon cuase I just love bolt action and has an old .22 mag. Simmons for sights. I like to shoot small things at 50 yds. becuase it shoots flat for 50 yds. and this is where my scopes centered. The smallest thing I shoot is a .22 shell w/ a .22 bullet, but this gets old after awhile so I've taken bottled waters and I hoot em at 100 yds. I gotta hold high just where the crosshairs thicken up , you know 3" high and hit perfect every time. I've tried to shoot paper targets at 150 to 200 yds. and I cant even see where my bullets going. Maybe one day I'll get it. I'd like to hear some FACTUAL stories of .22 long rifle shots made by you guys. THANK ALOT.

Prairie Dog at 178 yards with my MK II 5 1/2" & Ultra Dot and Dynapoints.

Ranged with a Leica 1200.

FYI my doggin partner has me beat by 4 yards....won't let me live it down either.

I shoot my Mark III Ruger at 100 yards most of the time. The last time I was at the outdoor range in the National Forest, some guy brought a decoy crow to shoot at. He couldn't hit it with his single shot Ithaca rifle in .22LR caliber and I asked him if he wanted it ventilated. He looked at my pistol and said, ya, I want to see you ventilate it.

I emptied my clip loaded with 5 rounds of Wal-Mart's 550 Federal hollow point and nailed it twice. The Cop shooting next to me said I should pack up and go home or take a chance of ruining the myth stories he was going to tell about me.

It's more practice and sighting your gun at that range than anything else. The Simmons red dot and Hi-Vis front glow pipe have been taken off and tossed in the bottom of my bag because they are too big and the dot dwarfs the target. You have to estimate you are centered on something that is covered up.

I'm still shooting standard sights but have VQ custom micro adjustable rear sights on my birthday list :-)

I picked up a metal frame stand at the flea market this weekend. I made a steel plate about 9" in diameter and hung it with two chains. I'm looking forward to hearing the clink and getting some feedback from 100 yards.

I can hear the bullet hit the cardboard if Rambo isn't shooting his ar-10 at the time. I sure wish I lived around some of you old timers and could learn from you. I'm learning on my own other than this forum.

Nothing like a "clanger" to keep the boredom away.

It's good for showing off too. Everyone else can see it swing where they can't see a .22 hole at 100 yards. :-)

The reactive targets are fun too. Either the metal ones that flop around or the ballistic foam prairie dogs/gophers that go round and round. I had a young fellow come down from the other end of the shooting benches and ask me where I got my gophers. I was making them role at about 60 yards with my .22s. The DNR range won't let me shoot the metal targets, so I have to settle for the ballistic foam at the state range. TB

When zeroed for 100 yards (91 meters), the trajectory of the standard high-velocity .22 LR with a 40-grain (2.6 g) bullet has a 2.7-inch (69 mm) rise at 50 yards (46 meters), and 10.8 inches (270 mm) drop at 150 yards (137 meters).[6] A .22 LR rifle needs to be zeroed for 75 yards (69 m) to avoid over-shooting small animals like squirrels at intermediate distances.[6]

So if I zero at 75 yds., the 10.8 at 150yds. is gonna change to a little higher number right?

Yep, it would likely be like a 13-14" drop+/-
