seeking bluing information

Post by toyfj40 » Thu Feb 15, 2007 7:15 pm

I'm not asking for advice on ReBluing... but rather How/What is bluing
such that my new-Old TruckGun is worn the way it is...

Last weekend, I got a Marlin-39a 1977 "truck gun"....
it looks pretty poor, but is complete, the bore is clean
it cycles/ ejects/ feeds great and is pleasant to shoot.

I spent over four-hours last Sunday for a complete (dis)assembly
and went over every part I could with #00-wool and GunOil...
I was not trying to re-expose bare metal, just get the surface
"crud" off... the barrel is totally un-blued... all gone, oxidized
somehow... even on the under-side along the Mag-Tube
and under the ForeStock...

Does this happen when the rifle sits in the bed of a PU-truck and
gets rained on... a few times... or when it falls out of the BassBoat
and gets pulled up a little later...

I'm kinda partial to it the way it is... especially since it is a nice-shooter.
(now I'm looking for a 336/30-30 truck gun to go with it... )
I've ordered a Skinner Sight to go on it...

any ideas on How the bluing got eat-up? looking to be edjumacated.

Toy, that Marlin looks pretty good in the pictures. It doesn't look like it was too mistreated based on the condition of the stock and forend. Or is it just that you're a really great photographer and have a part-time job doing promo shots for supermodels? I got to tell you though, buddy, you need to rake your leaves!

the 39a reminds me of the 'beat-up' old pickup truck you see parked
at the cafe... then when it starts up to drive away, you know the owner
is a top-notch mechanic... but doesn't have any 'Body Work' skills...
It's like it spent its life behind the seat of a '64 Chevy Apache pickup
and was pulled out to shoot at various farm-varmits...
with the occasional drops of GunOil and never used to drive fence-posts
or leverage the barb-wire... a quick-glance at the receiver/barrel
in the right light... almost looks like some Case-Hardening...
but appears to be some under-stain from applying the bluing
once the bluing has simply oxidized away...

The recent demise of the Winchester mfg prompted this
Marlin -vs- Winchester article.

Leaves: the trees shade and prevent growth of any grass... so
the leaves serve to slow any erosion... ;)
(that's my story/excuse)
Photography: many years ago, in a prior youthful life, I took some
better-than-average shots... and decided to ask a then-girlfriend
if I could take some photos of her in the nude... she replied
"NO, you have to at least keep your pants ON..."

Man, I should have seen those coming! I'm going to use the one about the leaves on my wife and see if I can delay raking mine!
