Waterlogged Mossey

Post by bgreenea3 » Thu Nov 05, 2009 10:24 pm

I'm a diver on my local Dive Rescue Team/ Today I pulled a Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag shot gun off the bottom of a lake.

It's owner's son had lost it in 10 feet of water about a month ago when he flipped his canoe while setting decoys. I pulled the shotgun out of water check the chamber worked the slide a few times and pulled the trigger.....

AFTER BEING ON THE BOTTOM OF A FRESHWATER LAKE FOR 30 DAYS OR SO, the action worked smoothly and the gun dryfired with a nice CLICK.

This makes me very impressed with the quality and toughness of mossberg shotguns that there was very little corrosion on the gun and it still functioned after 30days submerged in a lake. +1 for mossberg

Not to detract from the quality of the gun itself, but two other factors apply here:

1. Fresh water. Try that in salt water and see what you get.

2. Water does not corrode things by itself, you need oxygen. As long as the weapon was completely submerged, very little if any oxygen was able to get to it.
An empty weapon is just a very expensive hammer.

add in the Ph of the muck it was in (lots of oak leaves) and all the other lake bottom goo... I'm still impressed i've seen things that were submerged less time with more damage...

...just sayin' i was impressed...
