reloading 45acp
I have a lyman expert reloading set I bought years ago and never used much. Now that I'm shooting bullseye I need to start loading my own again. So I'm looking for some help in picking a powder and some info on buying bullets and primers. Does anyone have a favorite load they want to share? Right now I don't have the time to cast my own bullets so a source to buy would be helpful too. I will be shooting a Springfield 1911 with a ultra dot.
I love this forum You guys really seem to have some good advice!
See you on the firing line

My Bullseye load is:
200 grn Lyman cast Bevel Based Wadcutter - sized .452
4.2 grns Bullseye
CCI 300 Large Pistol Primer
I haven't fired these from a Ransom Rest yet, but they seem to be accurate and function in my Rock River without any problems.
To get the volumes I need, I size with a Magma - Star sizer, and I load with a Dillon 550B.

Bullet Source
I have had excellent service from Mid States Bullets. Their URL is https://www.bulletsdirect.com. Their prices are reasonable and shipping is included in the price. The loads I use for .45 ACP are a bit heavy for bullseye competition. With a 200 gr. LSWC I use 5.1 grains of Tite Group. I use that in a Sig P220 for IDPA matches. But I do like Tite Group as a powder. W231 is also a nice powder for a 200 LSWC.

I know SWC means semi wad cutter, but what does the L mean? I assume lead.Bullseye wrote:Some of the loads that I use in .45ACP are:
200 grns LSWC
4.1 grns Green Dot powder
Federal #150 Large Pistol primers
I also like
200 grns LSWC
4.0 grns Bullseye powder
Federal #150 Large pistol primers
Hope this helps.

If it does mean lead why do you use them instead of copper jackets? I read in a reloading book that using mostly lead bullets will extend the life of a barrel a little bit. Is that the only reason?

I also shoot a Springfield 1911A1 Custom BE wadgun. It has a bomar rib sight & 12lb recoil spring.
I use 200gn LSWC and 3.3 Gn of Bullseye powder. We only shoot the 25 yard line and this mild load works very well for me.

Hello Bullseye
What about your recoil spring? I used to have issues but then a fellow shooter suggested to change the spring once I changed from stock 15lb to 12lb spring, it started working well.

Is that the stock spring? I called Springfield gave them the serial of my gun, since it was custom built they were able to find the records and gave me the the recoil spring weight which was 15lbs.
It may be a good idea to check with them.

Bullseye have you ever tried a firing pin stop with the originaly JMB .078 radius on it, it really works to slow the slide impact on the way back and reduce muzzle flip.Bullseye wrote:No, mine is a special spring for my custom built wad gun.
