New Jersey has stringent assault weapons laws that are very similar and restrictive to the California ones concerning this style of firearm. NJ bans most firearms classified as "Assault Weapons", however there are some exceptions which come down to a sum of "military style" features on the weapon. They do specifically say that match style weapons do not meet the term "assault weapon" and cite one particular model the Colt Match Target as an example. After that having a pistol grip and two additional assault features classifies the weapon as assault style. While folding sights (A4 flat top models) are not one of the features listed, there's a lot of subjective interpretation applied by the NJ firearms licensing authorities, and may make a weapon with these a "tough sell" for an exception as a match compliant firearm. However an AR-15 with a 20" barrel, A2 configuration, sans both a flash suppressor and a bayonet lug would be considered a legal exception for purchase in NJ. Basically DCM legal AR-15 service rifles are allowed if they are in the configuration that was commonly known as "post-ban" under the now expired federal assault weapons legislation.

What does this mean to you? Well you can get a permit for a Match AR-15 but if you want one that is more of the "M4 carbine" variety you'll be mostly out of luck in NJ. Then in NJ there's the restrictions of magazine capacity; I don't even want to go there.

What are your NJ options?
CLE Match AR-15 20"barrel
Olympic Arms Target Match (A3), Ultra Match (A3) or Service Match (A2 configuration)
Bushmaster DCM-XR series
DPMS AR15 DCM/CMP models
Rock River DCM AR15 models
Colt Match Target (DCM variants)
All of these would be permitted under current NJ regulations.

Barrel twist rates depend on the weight of the bullet you intend to fire in the rifle. Basically between a 1-7 to 1-9 twist rate is good for service rifle competition, with some manufacturers producing barrels with twist rates in between these ranges like 1-8.5 etc. The higher the number the slower the spin, and the lower the number the faster the bullet spin rate. Lighter bullets, like 55 grain, tend to be more accurate in the slower rated barrels. Heavier bullets, 77 grain, can stand up to the faster barrel twist rates accuracy-wise.

Hope this helps.

All of the models described above use the direct impingement gas system. The operating system of the rifle does not affect the term assault weapon under NJ legislation.
