Paranoid Enough?

Taking great care to guard your social security number and other personal information? It's very likely that they are available online for free or a modest fee.

Had a chat with Betty Ostergren yesterday. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/07/court-ssn/. She has published on-line http://www.opcva.com/watchdog/ a number of SSAN's, including, Jeb Bush's. She says that millions of records containing SSAN's, dates of birth, addresses and other information are regularly published on line. If you do almost anything through Clerk of the Court or city/county records offices, the information goes online. They do not redact things like SSAN and DOB.

When you die, your name, SSAN and other information gets published in the Social Security Death Index. If your survivor's benefits are linked through you and your SSAN, such as military retirement, this information is now public.

The officials whose personal info has been published on this website were really interested in getting their information cleared but no so interested in fixing the problem for all of us.
