ammo supplies improving

Greentop had .223 500 rnds for $368 in both 55gr and 62 gr. They also had a 30 gal drum with 12500 rounds for only $6800. Seemed to have pretty good stocks of everything but .22lr. Heard that Dick's had .22 LR by the brick. All was quantity limited. I don't think I'd need more than one drum of .223 at a time.

You'd need a forklift or pallet jack to move that barrel of .223! That works out to about $0.55 a round. I don't know if you need 12.5K of ammo but you might get some other folks to go in and split it up.

I almost went into Greentop the other day as I was traveling by but that exit comes up real fast when you don't expect it. I thought I'd take a look around and see what they had on the shelf.

If I had 12.5k rounds, I probably wouldn't be to keen on reloading for a couple-three years.

You may be able to squeeze a few more years out of that barrel, unless you think you'll shoot way over 4K of .223 per year.

Gander truck day today, got there my usual hour after they open.

They had every caliber. Had a couple of cases of CCI .22 Short, $3.99 a box. About a case of CCI standard velocity at $4.99 a box. Most of a case of Remington Thunderbolts was all the HV they had, $2.29 a box, so I got two (the limit) just out of principle. I don't much care for any Remington .22.

There was some Remington white box .38 for $26.99, and I passed on that. Higher than my usual Federal.

It's looking better, but I'm still waiting to see stacks of Federal Value Packs.

I go plinking about once a week. So If I took the .223 out 45 times and fired 100 rounds average, that's 2.8 years supply. More realistically, that's 5-7 years supply.

That average was more around what I was thinking time-wise.

What was the headstamp on the bulk .223?

I didn't look at head stamps. When I did the $/bang I stopped looking.

I was just curious if it was Federal 'LC' surplus ammo. Often lots of ammo destined for government use gets pulled as "Not For Combat Use" due to QA testing and finds its way onto the civilian market for distribution.

I bought .22lr at Walmart Yesterday

A sure sign of improving. This is the first time I've seen .22lr in Wallyworld this year. It was Winchester 40gr, copper coated, 1300 fps. Not sure I like it, but just for the novelty of buying .22lr I bought the limit of 3 100-round boxes. Also, a Dick's in the Richmond area had 4 1400 round tubs of RGB's for $69.

.223/5.56mm has been fairly available in my area recently. The availability of .22lr is still non-existent though.

At this point, I can't do business with Dick's Sporting Goods. After Newtown, in addition to ceasing all sales on "assault style weapons," Dick's terminated their business partnership with Troy Industries.

I can't support a sporting goods store that doesn't support my sport when it is not politically expedient. The funny thing is that Dick's now is selling "assault style rifles" again... The corporate managers of Dick's need to grow a backbone and have a little conviction.

On the contrary, Wal-Mart has impressed me. While I certainly do not agree with all of Wal-Mart's business practices, I still appreciate their conviction. They pretty much just want to make money. Consequently, Wal-Mart never capitulated to anti-second amendment calls. Nowadays, I actually shop at Wal-Mart more than I did before because I like to support businesses that support me (even if their reason was strictly monetary).

Times are still tough in ammo land. The place where I buy ammo products for reloading now opens only once per week, the shelves are empty and he's not had Varget powder in over a year cause he can't get it. It's still crazy and don't know when it'll let up, if ever.

I'm seeing a backslide. The last several weeks have had slimmer pickings and lesser brands at my sources, like Thunderbolts instead of Mini-Mags. Sellier and Bellot .38s instead of Federal.

My biggest puzzler has been Federal .22LR Value Packs. My Gander and Sportsman's Warehouse have not seen a single one since January. So where are they going, if there are any?

Those stores have only gotten a very few cases of Mini-Mags or Federal Champion bricks this year. They all say their shipments have been a lot smaller all year, with all calibers coming up short. If the factories are all running 24/7, the shipments should at least be the same size and similar makeup to last year's. Doesn't make sense to me.

Richmond Gun Show (at Racetrack) today. No big crowd on Sunday afternoon. Gun prices down a little? Ammo: 9mm, 7.62, .45 by case or half case and the prices weren't as bad as they had been. TulAmmo .223 $0.40/round, 500 round/1000 round cases and a variety of brass .224.
Reloader had lots of ammo, .45 in lead and coated, 1000 round 9mm TMJ (Speer), lead and jacked .38. Primers of all types: Winchester, Federal, CCI
Powder supplies fair, but no powder I recognized for .223.

Vendors started packing up at 3 PM

The nearest Walmart had CCI 40gr STD velocity in good supply yesterday. Still had their 3-box limit.
