new IDPA rules

I've shot USPSA for over 25 years and IDPA for about seven years. I've never concerned myself about the different philosophies, different approaches, and different rules. Participation in IDPA was just another day to enjoy shooting, competition, and good company. Recently the IDPA rules were changed to a somewhat more restrictive demands. I noticed that participation numbers were steadily dwindling over the past few months. Saturday the Match Director announced that this was the last IDPA match for our club. It would now be a local Defensive Pistol Match no longer run under an affiliation with IDPA and would be a match under a mixture of old IDPA rules with some minor "tweaks." The MD indicated this was a result of the dwindling participation and the myriad of complaints about the (put your favorite pejorative term here) new rules.

Personally, I could care less...tell me the rules, I'll shoot under them. But, I wonder if this is just my club or is it going to be something with which IDPA will have to deal? The law of unintended consequences?

What changes got everyone so upset?

I have noticed other clubs splitting off and creating their own local defensive pistol leagues for similar reasons. Most have a more generous classifying system thereby allowing more shooters with a broader spectrum of experience and abilities.

IDPA rules

Greener,

There was a total revision of the IDPA rule book, so there are quite a few. A couple of examples: The shooter can no longer dry-fire, practice draws, or practice reloads in the safe area. The shooter can reload only while standing flat-footed. Several mandatory restrictions on where and how the shooter may engage targets. And so on.

When I first started shooting IPSC/USPSA we had only two divisions: Limited and Open. It became something of an "equipment race," and many dropped out because of the expense to stay competitive. We experienced a fall off of participation severe enough that the Board of Directors opened up more divisions (Production, Revolver, Limited-10, etc.)...some of which allowed only stock-condition, off-the-shelf pistols to avoid undue expense. Thankfully this led to a "come back" for the organization.

Sincerely, I hope this is not a similar situation for IDPA. I guess it's just a wait and see.
