The critter that's been dining on my chickens is back. We had hoped it had moved on over the winter, but I found the remains of two birds yesterday.

My wife sez "If I see it, I'd shoot it, but I'm not a very good shot. You should probably give me a refresher."

Being a guy, my very first thought was "Gee, a new Henry .22 would be just the ticket for her. Easier to operate than a clip-fed bolt (My Winnie 75) and cheaper to shoot than my .22 Mag."

Downeaster, as usual I like your thinking. Get her the H001 or the youth model and stick a 1" tube red dot in Harris Quick Release Rimfire rings. They are made to lock right on the grooves and will not slip, yet can be removed in seconds. Anyway, any kind of red dot and she will be in business even in very low light, ready for a quick accurate shot. My spouse loves her H001 and she can pop a 1&1/2" milk bottle cap out to 25 yards and keep it dancing. My H001T is too heavy for her. My neighbor has the similar setup on his 22 and his chickens are fine.

Yup, I think a red dot is just the ticket.

I'll be calling my favorite push...uh, I mean, gun dealer this weekend.

Two questions:

1. My local push...uh, gun dealer, is listing the Henry @ $320, is that about right?

2. What's the difference between a tube-style red-dot sight and the tubeless "holographic" sight? I'm interested in being able to pick the dot up and get it on target quickly. On the BSA red-dots on my handguns, I sometimes have to hunt around a bit to find the dot.

$320 is good for the H001T, that is the one with the octagon barrel. It is a very nice rifle and I love it, but my wife considers it to heavy. She likes the regular H001 which should sell for approx $267.
I love the tube red dots, but Midway has the BSA holo sight on sale right now for $50 which makes it interesting. Keep in mind that you will need some way to mount the sight on the grooves, thats why I like the 1' tube in the Burris rimfire rings. Regards

I may have created a monster...

Showed SWMBO how to use the Henry lever-action .22mag yesterday.

This morning we let the birds out and I spent an hour sitting in the haymow looking out the window at the spot where the fox has been jumping the fence.

SWMBO came down and relieved me and about 30 minutes later I hear BANG...BANG...BANG!

She didn't hit him partly due to buck fever but mostly due to the fact that he was on a dead run at the time.

She says "I think you should take me out and let me practice so I don't get so excited and can maybe actually hit something."

About an hour after that, my local Mom and Pop part-time FFL dealer called and said "My boy said you stopped by yesterday looking for me."

"Yup, looking for a Henry lever action in .22 s/l/lr"

Wife says "ANOTHER gun?"

"Well," says I, "The one you just shot uses $15/box ammo. The one I want is exactly like it, except it uses $2/box ammo. Lot cheaper to practice that way."

She bought it...

Apparently, being shot at ticks foxes off BAD! Sometime between 1:30 and 5:30 he/she came back and killed 9 more chickens, and was lugging off the tenth when I came around the corner of the barn.

Of course, by the time I ran back to the house and grabbed Henry, it was long gone.

Lotta folks commenting about the fox population around here. 2-3 years ago, you NEVER saw a fox out in broad daylight, now they're running in packs.

I'm thinking this must be two or more, hunting for their kits. I'm out of the egg business for a while until I build my flock back up.

These things tend to go in cycles, there'll be a rabies epidemic in a year or so and the fox population will decline.

If SWMBO has anything to say, the local population decline will start a lot sooner than that! She's down in the barn with Henry now, and will sit there until the birds coop up for the night.

This woman is a world-class grudge holder. Those foxes have NO idea who their messing with!

Hope she get a couple and yoou can hav a stole made for her to wear, got to make them pay.

Funny you should mention that. She was just saying "We need to encourage people to wear more fox stoles and such."

I got an idea the first one will wind up with his hide tacked to the barn...
