Unfortunately, I cannot "carry" during working hours where I am employed, I would get fired.
For those of you Michiganders familiar with the Detroit area, here is some real estate that could probably be had pretty cheaply.
This house was about 10 feet away from where I parked for the last week, during working hours, just on this side of the fence.
About half the houses in view from this spot, are either like this one or boarded up.
This location is 1 blk south of Davidson Freeway, and 1 blk east of Joseph Campau street.
Fortunately, I was inside a building that had locks on it. Still wish I had my 45 with me though.

It is really depressing seeing houses like this. I imagine what it "once was", and what it is now. What a difference. I don't know what the answer is for Detroit, but with the economy like it is, I don't see a quick fix. I wonder if the best thing that could happen to house like this would be devil's night?

I hate to say it haka but the roof is caved in and the thing is about to fall in on itself, a controled burn or demo might be the best thing for a house like that, make it an empty lot, then you won't haveit being used as a crack house. once there are enough open properties some developer could buy them up from the city (or the bank) and redevelop the area. Its going to be hard to convince good people to move into a BAD neighborhood otherwise.

You could carry to work, but then what? You would want to avoid leaving a piece in your car in such a fine neighborhood. I know most unenlightened employers wouldn't let you bring it in and stow it in a locker.

I think that if someone has a carry permit, and they are robbed, injured or worse as a consequence of such a work policy, the employer should be liable.

Someone got fired about 5 years ago for having a couple "heaters" in his car. He got into an accident, and when the police brought the two guns to the hospital, his boss was coincidentally there and seen them. After a process, he was fired. I don't like that rule, but that is the way it is. I work in the field, so I travel all over the place, and Detroit is one of the spots I work.

Relax, it's not in Portage.

Haka, some of the places I visited in Detroit had chain link fences with concertina wire as toppers. That's the only way I'd feel safe leaving a firearm, or anything of value, in a car in those areas.

My real introduction to parts of Detroit was the warning not to walk from the Ronald McDonald House to the entrance to Michigan Children's Hospital (<50 yards) after dark without an armed escort from Hospital Security. That was 30 years ago, and I don't think things have improved.

Greener, how could they get any worse? South of 8 Mile is no man's land for sure.

Down in South Detroit (some people call it East Toledo) that seems to be the standard solution, although a less formal method seems to be being used.

I call it a "reverse barn raising" ... the way I imagine it the whole community gets together, but instead of bringing lumber and nails they bring gasoline, lighters, and a cell phone to dial 911 once the fire is fully involved.

With so many of us in the area, should we pool our resources and buy a few city blocks of Detroit? We could bulldoze, fortify, and have a nice shooting club for cheap!

I thought that was an open shooting area now, just targets of opportunity.

you can't use those folks with the lighters and cellphones for targets though I think that is generally frowned upon.... even in D-town

Being 55 yo old, I can retire with 80% retirement pay. Hmm??? I wonder how long one can challenge the odds, working in Detroit? What an armpit down there.

Well you have all heard the joke where a visitor asked a Detroit citizen if the stories of extreme danger were true, and the guy said: No, he hadn't had any serious problems in his whole working career in the worst parts of the city. The surprised tourist then asked what the local did for a living and the guy said that he was a Tail Gunner on a Budweiser truck
