A poster on the rimfire central walther forum (M1911) is big on rem oil, blowing the pistol dry and moly lube. Along with some parts polishing, it seems to keep his P22 from self-destructing.

I've used Breakfree followed by a good wipe down with an oiled cloth as Bullseye posted. Seems to have worked well so far. The slide functions well and I don't get the sticky oil/residue build up.
