This is such a great site, I thought I'd ask for a little assistance. I'm a woodworker, and decided to make a set of grips for my MarkIII. I know I could get a set for about $50, but I have invested about $100 in checkering tools, small gouges, and have about 5 sets of practice sets, not counting the Brazilian Rosewood, cuts, scrapes and bruises. (It's the principle of the thing now, plus I'm stubborn). I have the basic grip and am in the process of clearing out the material on the underside of left grip. Most of my projects have been larger than this, so I don't have much in the way of tools for small, detailed work.

I know Bullseye made a set for his gun, and I'm sure others have as well. I'd like to know what you used to clear the excess material out so that it looks decent. I've used a dremel, 1/4" chisel, and home-made scraper and a couple other things, but am not happy yet. I have the basic shape, just need to clean it up some so I'm not embarrassed to show someone (or to post pictures).

Any help would be appreciated, and pictures of the underside of the left grip and finished products would be most helpful.

I haven't made any wooden ones for the Mark III yet. But I have altered Mark II VQ Volathane grips to fit on a Mark III. I have some shots of how to alter the underside of the grip for your mag release hold down screw.

Bullseye, speaking of grips...I'm left handed and really like the feel of the vq volthane grip. Unfortunately they don't come left handed for the MK111. Have you or anyone else shot them on a MK111 left handed? How did it feel? Do you have any suggestions for the MK111 that is comparable and is for lefties? Thanks in advance.

I have not attempted to modify a set of Volthane's for a left handed configuration. The method I used for modifying a Mark II set should work for the left handed set. One has to split the grips into two halves and then construct a button hat for the mag release. I used some Delrin for my button extension. I made a set of cardboard templates for locating the button's position referenced on the grip screw holes.

I modified this grip for the Mark III and a few short weeks later Volquartsen released their Mark III Volthane grip. It was interesting to see how we separately came up with a similar design for the Mark III pistol.
