I've tested a few new guns lately and compared to my 24yr old MkII cocking is much easier and smoother on the new ones. I have much resistance at first then is kinda pops back. When I had it apart I noticed the milling marks on the bottom of slide. Is this just more charactoristic of older models???

Machining marks in firearms were more a product of the time rather than anything else. Many brands sported these surface blemishes back in the 1970's and 80's. Today's firearms are mostly made in a CNC process and the quality standards are a little more consistent than those earlier years. Functionality of the older pistols is not in question and many are preferred over the newer models by firearms owners.

Thanks Bullseye! That is what I thought. It functions great and not an issue and nothing I'm going to worry about either. I just got this gun and it was exploritory when I took it all apart. I'm not sure this 24 year old thing had been taken apart much. Thanks for the answer.

Another question if you don't mind. I have noticed on others on this site a guard of some sort blocking the trigger compontents. Does that come with the trigger upgrade or something else I need to invest in after I get the VQ trigger. Are there any other triggers that are better?

Sounds as if someone has put a blast shield on it to keep the powder residue off the trigger components to some extent. There was an after market one available at one time but most were home made from soda can. Is it just a thin metal piece over the trigger. On my Mark II's I have added a pre travel screw to the trigger but this makes all your adjustments internal, the VQ trigger you can adjust without stripping the gun down.

A trigger shield is not part of the VQ kit. The trigger shield was a part that an enterprising individual came up with many years ago. He sold them like hotcakes, almost by the gross. They were made out of stainless shim stock and fit the Mark II model. But a few years back he went out of business and the supply dried up on these. Also with the release of the Mark III, with its trigger that has a tab on the back side, that style shield would not work properly. There are some home made plans out there to fashion these out of pop cans or other thin metals. I haven't seen a real need for this type of shield, except in the case of a really loose receiver. In that situation, the shield acts as a shim and tightens up the fit between the frame and receiver.
