MK III 22/45 firing pin spring?

How necessary is the firing pin spring in the MkIII 22/25 pistol?

I ask because I'm a decades-long owner of a circa 1950 Ruger Automatic and having cleaned it hundreds of times never found such a spring in it. I won this in a poker game in college and it runs flawlessly without a firing spring.

Any reason I can't leave the firing pin spring out of the 22/45 the next time I clean it?

The firing pin return spring is there to prevent slam fires. Your early 1950 Standard may have the a different, older style, firing pin than the newer models of today, which is why you don't see a spring.
