Volquartsen Sear

Post by wrj » Tue Sep 14, 2010 10:31 am

I have a Ruger MKIII 22/45 and wondering if a VQ sear makes a significant improvement in the trigger action. One thing that has me worried is I have read several messages where it appears people are having issues with the VQ sear. It makes me wonder about their quality.
So does the VQ sear make a significant difference; i.e. is it worth it? And are they a quality product?

VQ sear

The VQ sear is the single best upgrade for the trigger. Mine worked perfectly but I have seen posts about some people having problems. VQ will replace any sear that does not work. They recently (about a year ago)changed the manufacturing process and may of had some tolerance issues but current production is likely to be OK.

+1 on the sear. I'd add their target trigger, also.

I have VQ sears, triggers, and Clark bushings in both of my Mark lll pistols. I am very satisfied with the results :D

The VQ sear and Clark MKII bushing gives the most bang for the buck.

I've had a few minor fit issues in customer's guns with the new style sears but all were remedied with a few strokes of the file.

Bullseye: Is the filing to get proper function on the sear or what? Is it something easy and recommended for the average, non gunsmith, person?

I agree that the Volquartzen Sear was the best part in the trigger kit of theirs that I bought but the pre travel & over travel adjustments on the Target Trigger are also very nice plus their springs are lighter too..
My trigger pull is right @ 2lbs & smooth & light with no creap..
I locktited a new Ruger Hammer bushing into the hammer & have zero play in that area, But may pick up a Clark Bushing @ the gunshows if I come across one.. Hope Paul Zint @ KY Guns has one in stock..
My Buddy needs a couple of Volquartzens Extractors for two new 10/22 He's bought so I'll see Paul this weekend..

Am I just lucky or do I misunderstand something?

My Mark III has a Volquartsen Mark II hammer bushing installed, just to eliminate the mag safety. I started with the washers, then decided to be a big spender for the $8 bushing.

I do have a stainless washer filling the inset of the hammer side. The washer sets out slightly, so the bushing is actually against the 'finished' side of the washer, not the hammer.

The gun has a LCI plug, and everything else is factory stock.

My trigger pull is about three pounds, very smooth, and the "bang" is always a surprise. I do have the usual factory take-up, and just a tiny bit of creep and overtravel.

Am I just easy to please, or would I really benefit from a different sear, bushing, trigger, etc.? I like this Mark III just like it is.

Why there's nothing wrong with the pistol box stock. You can still kill Coke cans and hunt with it if you wish. It's when you are trying to put one hole in a piece of paper at 25yds is where all the trick stuff comes into play and shines.

I am going to put a bushing in my MK-III because I hate the mag safety. The rest is going to stay stock. Now my 22/45 I have some trick stuff in it and will probably will put more in it. :)

Generally the strokes with the file have been on the thumb safety hook. The bottom of the hook has been dragging on the top of the new VQ sear. Of course each has its own peculiarities and must be inspected for clearance.
