Been gone for too long but back into rimfire shooting. I've been spending quality time with my MKII and MkIII equipped with Red Dots. A buddy tried my shooters and got the fever. He's got a very old Hi Standard Supermatic on which he'd like to mount a red dot.
At first glance it doesn't appear to be possible. Any advice, suggestions or help will be much appreciated. TIA!

Your buddy could get his pistol drilled and tapped, then just pop a weaver rail on. Looking at the design of the pistol, the optic would have to be mounted pretty far forward. Looks to me like balance could become an issue for some.

If your buddy has any spare means, I would probably just suggest he get a new .22 pistol that is already drilled and tapped.

Yeah, his HS is a sweet shooter with a great trigger but my first thought was as yours. The mount would have to be so unorthodox it could to take the fun out of it. I wonder how much coaxing it would take to get him into a MKIII or even an older MKII.

A weaver scope mount for a High Standard has the mounting holes over the barrel and the rail extends back over the slide, a set-up much like a Model 41 has for its rear sight. You tap the barrel for two mounting holes and a Weaver rail, like the one Volquartsen sells, goes around $30 retail. Volquartsen also sells a pre-tapped, drop-in, match barrel for a High Standard but you would still have to purchase a weaver rail for it.

I would not drill/tap a original barrel on a HS. W/that said I would either buy another HS barrel, buy an after market barrel or, get a mount that does not need the barrel drilled and tapped. Finding a used HS barrel might be the hardest option, but they are around. New HS barrels from HS in Texas can be ordered from, HS, Brownells, or Numrich. Brownells also sells after market barrels from Lebanon Screw Co. (LSC). For an aftermarket barrel look at, LSC, Connecticut Precision Chambering, or Volquartsen. I only know of 1 place for mounts w/o drilling, BME. I am in the same boat as your buddy. I would like to mount optics on my HS 106 Trophy, but have not got around to doing it yet. Mine has a 7 1/4" barrel that is great for iron sight accuracy but, it gets heavy for me after shooting it for a while. You did not say which supermatic he has. I did make the assumption his has the push button take down. HS are so quick and easy to swap barrels on because of the push button. You can have a barrel dedicated for iron sights and one w/optics, and swap them out as needed.
