I was out wandering around Wednesday. Greentop had a used M41. The pistol looked very clean and like it hadn't been fired much. 7" barrel. The target grips had the thumb rest ridge on the left handgrip. The right grip had a ridge for separating the index finger, I suppose. That grip ridge ended up cutting into palm. Is that typical of the M41 grips? They also were really proud of the gun.

I looked it up. $1199 is definitely proud. I don't know much about 41s, but there are other grips for them if you had any green left after buying it.

The stock grips contain a subtle thumb rest bump which is present on both side panels for ambidextrous use and this may be what you are describing. Bargains in M41's are not easy to find but I do run across them from time to time. The last one I bought used for my personal collection was $400 a few years ago and had a five inch field barrel. I couldn't pass that one up even though I didn't really need it. My bride prefers shooting it over the heavy 5.5" barrel versions due to the lighter overall weight. The stock grips also fit her smaller hand size much better than mine. I have some Herrett target grips for fitting my large hands and also have made several "1911trainer" versions for myself. One set I intentionally "fattened" up by increasing the thickness of the panels and keeping the same shape.

Yeah, that was one of the negatives. The used ones I've seen have been in the $900-$1200 range for the past few years.

Years ago I owned a M41.

I bought an extra slide release, welded a small bit of flat stock on it and created an extended slide release. Final shaping, polishing and finishing the thing took a lot more time than putting it together.

If I had it to do over again, I would use a checkering file to checker the upper side of the extension.
