I'm looking into switching to .22 LR for shooting 3/8" thick, 6" diameter, steel plates at 50 yards and need ammo suggestions. Accuracy and knock down power are both seem important and I've already discovered standard velocity ammo is marginal for knock down power.
The MKIII manual indicates to use standard or high velocity ammo and doesn't mention hyper velocity ammo that I now see on the shelves. Is hyper velocity ammo thus prohibited in MKIIIs? Seems like hyper velocity ammo might meet my needs. Can the MKIII take an occasional dose of hyper velocity ammo ? [i.e. 20 rounds per month] Are there some modifications necessary to prevent excessive wear and tear ? Thanks for responses......

IMO: 1cm steel-plates at 50yds is not a .22lr target.
Each plate likely has a balance-adjustment and if hit "hi"
can leverage the plate to fall... the adjacent plate
will be adj a little differently and striking it mid/lo may not tip over...

In any case, I'd stay with an ammo that I've found shoots
well and consistently with the MK-pistol and if THAT ammo
tips THOSE plates... then I'd consider using it...
But I wouldn't try to find an ammo just to increase the
delivered energy at 50yds and likely sacrifice accuracy
or wear the pistol.

that being said... CCI makes Several .22lr varieties that just might
improve your situation... MiniMag, SGB... CCI-ballistics

Seems to me the heavier bullets moving relatively fast would do the trick. I'd check out the CCI Velocitor. It's a heavy bullet hauling a$$. Otherwise I'd try various brands of 40gr high-vel until you find the one that is most accurate in your gun. Might also test out the Aguila SSS. It's a 60gr bullet at around 800fps+/-. Some pple have trouble with this round stabilizing with the slow twist of factory barrels.

Every .22 is different in it's ammo preferences, good thing it's cheap.
