S&W 41 cocking indicator????????????

have read some earlier models of the 41 had a "cocking indicator". What exactly did it do? Let you know when it was cocked? Also was it beneficial to have. I am getting a 41 and might go with the older model that has the indicator if it is a good thing to have. Thanks in advance for the advice.....Sonny

The cocking indicator is just a little pin that showed when the hammer was cocked. The hammer is internal and cannot be seen if cocked or uncocked. A short tug on the slide reveals the answer to the hammer's position.
This picture shows one. Not very useful, in fact quite a sharp (hazardous) little part. Most of these were disabled by pistol smiths working on M-41's. One of mine have it and I don't even pay attention to it.
