Out at the club today, one of my bud's shows up with an old rifle his old farmer neighbor needs to get rid of.

As he knows, I don't have a Savage 44 1/2 in .22 r.f. in my safe yet...lol

geez,.....

I'll post a pic when I pick it up..

ah, well. wish I had said no.. lol

turned out to be a Stevens 44, not a 44 1/2, in .22 lr.

Bullseye, you have any experience with this vintage gun???

Late edit... figured out how to fix it..... not on any schematic anywhere...

The underlever was flopping open when you cocked the hammer. turns out there's a small screw in the front side of the breechblock that you can turn out to put pressure on the cam... I think there's supposed to be a spring behind it to give pressure, but, blue loctite worked just as well....

yes there should be a spring and plunger to 'tension' both the breech block and the lever.

Unfortunately it doesn't show on model 44 schematics. 44's don't have the pin and spring in the lever like the 44 1/2s do. It also is only on the early models. The later ones you replace the link.

Thanks for the Welcome, Bullseye :)

Perazzi- is there a chance you can snap a pic of the breech block screw? (only because petty details intrigue me- and there are so many that change from model to model ) Beautiful gun btw!

Thank You! I fully can see where that location would be confusing to its relation to lever adjustment, and also where the schematics fail. Doesn't look like that screw has been adjusted much, if at all in the past 100-ish years . Cherry one might say. Great find even if it wasn't the 44 1/2 you were expecting.

Berry's aren't tiny...use the "zoom in" and scroll mucho with the trackball  but I *do* understand.
