New range

Hi gang,

At the property I have a range that's 75 yards max, for pistols and 22s, so I thought I'd also create a 150 yarder for some longer rifle shots. I will be shooting down into the hill, as the picture indicates.

I'd like to make it as economical as possible so I thought a couple of fence posts cemented into the ground, and a wire or string strung between them ought to allow me to hang the targets where I'll need them. On the shooter's side I can buy a used adjustable heavy duty drafting/computer desk (metal with Formica tops) for $50 but the Formica will have to be replaced with treated 3/4 inch plywood for a top. Or I can build with treated lumber an honest to goodness shooting bench but I don't have plans for it. All better suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

This picture shows part of my driveway, I'd say it's about 500-600 yards in total.

Here's the link to more pictures of Double Trouble Acres, since you appear to have enjoyed the original. But any suggestions on the range buld? I'd like to complete it this weekend.

It took about 3 hours to build with the help of a friend. The bench is solid and works very-very well.

Follow the plans, and the materials list, and you can't go wrong. My construction phase:

George,

If you want to make a "sticky" about that bench let me know. You start the topic in this forum and I'll make it a sticky. I will go over to your photobucket account and copy the picture over to my server so your PB account doesn't go over on bandwidth. I also didn't see the materials list over at PB but there was one image that did not show up.

That's a nice looking set-up you have there! I especially like the pistol box set up on the long line.

I'd be a little worried about what appear to be power lines. Granted, you would probably never hit one but still something to watch out for.

but I think I'll tie a flag onto one of their wires so that I'll know which way the wind's blowing.

As you can see the target apperatus is nothing fency but it worked well, especially when placing a few rocks into the box. All in all I am happy with my new range but does anyone have a suggestion for an inexpensive range finder. It's close enough to 160 or so yards but I'd like to know exactly how far I am shooting. May also place a heavy gauge metal backstop just for added security even though I am shooting down onto the target.

Check with your friends that play golf. I know of 1 neighbor that has one he uses when he plays a new course. You may be able to borrow one.
