MKIII 22-45 Hunter Trigger Question

Post by MicanopyMike » Fri Aug 20, 2010 8:01 pm

Hello--

I just acquired a MKIII 22-45 Hunter and was not happy with
having to pull the magazines down firmly to get them out after
pressing the mag release button.

After investigating I came to the conclusion that this was
caused by the magazine disconnect. Not seeing much reason
to have such a function I decided to remove it and its spring.
(A pox on California lawyers!)

I shaped and sized some spacers to fill the spaces created
on the support bushing and reassembled the gun and tested
to make sure all functions were operating properly.

I made no changes to the sear or trigger (well-- I did install
an over-travel set-screw to eliminate the rather awful amount
of over-travel) but no changes were made to the sear or the
sear ledge on the hammer.

I did dab a tiny pin-head size speck of moly paste on the sear face.

After adjusting the over-travel I discovered that the sear releases
at around 3.5 lb on my digital trigger-pull scale. This is a little
lighter than I like, but I can live with it.

The problem I encountered is that it is hard to tell when the
pre-travel ends and the sear take-up begins. The pre-travel
measures at around 3.0 lb and the sear take-up is 3.5 lb.

There is so little difference between the two that the trigger must
be worked v-e-r-y carefully to feel the point where pre-travel
ends and sear take-up begins.

Has anyone experienced this same problem?

--------------------------------

One other thing-- when I got the gun, the magazine latch would
not "click" and lock unless I gave the base of the magazines
a REALLY hard smack. I removed the mag bases and took
about 0.030" off the faces that mate with the 2 matching points
on the bottom of the mag well. Now the mags seat without
needing to pound on them and there is no excess play. Is it
common to encounter mag bases that are not quite dimensioned
properly? I am assuming (?) that the dimension error is in the base
plates and not in the base of the grip. I did not want to make any
alterations to the base of the mag well until I learned more.
I can always replace the mag base pads!

There are other issues with this gun that I would like to hear
some feedback on from the forum members but first things first...

Thanks for any feedback on the items detailed above!!

MicanopyMike, Welcome to GunTalk-Online.

I don not own a 22/45, All steel here, but have had to correct the mag fit. This on my MKIII, had to tweek the lips and catch notch.

To increase the trigger pull you can install a stronger trigger plunger spring. Generally most are going lighter not heavier.

If you remove the barrel/receiver you will be able to see when the pre travel ends and sear movement starts.

Welcome to Guntalk-Online!

The Mark III mag safety does keep the magazines in the frame and removing it is the right way to have the mags drop free. Some pistols have had magazine seating issues but those are individual Ruger pistols and not an entire class like the 22/45.

The best way to eliminate pretravel is to install a trigger that has a pretravel screw. Eliminate is kind of a misnomer as a little pretravel movement is necessary for the pistol's disconnector to reset the trigger on the sear. However you can remove almost all of it.
