Finessing a MKIII 22-45 trigger pull....

Post by MicanopyMike » Sat Aug 21, 2010 4:20 pm

I suppoe this is actually a follow-up to my previous query about getting
a MKIII 22-45 Hunter set up "just-right" but as a newbie to this forum
I am not quite sure what the protocol is....

In any event, some background: I have, over the past 20 years done
trigger work on or rebuilt over 30 1911 Govt 1911's. I have in my
workshop all manner of sear jigs, hammer jigs, polishing stones, special
files and a ton of other specialized tools for working on Gooberment 1911's.

I am an old hand at stoning 1911 sear faces and hammer ledges
at just the right angles to produce a safe 4.0 to 4.5 lb clean break with
no creep or critchy feel and just the correct amount of pre-travel and
over-travel.

Now-- having said all that, I am a complete neophyte at working on MKIII
22-45 sears and hammers. In a previous post I detailed a problem I had
after removing the mag disconnector. The trigger break is very clean but
on the light side at about 3.5 lb and the pre-travel is around 3.0 lb. This
makes it hard to distinguish when the pre-travel ends and the sear
disengagement begins.

One answer, I suppose, would be to install a slightly stiffer sear spring,
but other than fabricating one, where would I find such? I have
fabricated springs in the past (but it is such a bother) and I have never
been confident in my getting the heat-treatment just right so they don't
take a set after a couple of months.

The other obvious possibility is to alter the delicate interface angle
relationships between the MKIII 22-45's sear face and hammer ledge
face. As anyone who has ever done any sear face and hammer ledge
stoning knows, this is effectively impossible to get just right without
custom jigs to hold the sear and hammer at the proper angles to get
a safe, clean trigger break at just the right weight desired.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of any sear face jigs or hammer face jigs
commonly available for the MKIII 22-45's. I could always fabricate
these, but that is a lot of work for doing the occasional MKIII 22-45.

Can anyone offer any suggestions or feedback on this?

Thanks--

Ruger 22 Automatics all use the same hammer and sear jigs. There is no specific fixture for Mark III's, the hammers and sears all are the same parts. The only difference in the Mark III hammer is the step cut out of the side for the magazine safety hook.

Power Custom makes an adapter for their PC-1 stoning fixture for the Ruger Mark II hammer and sear. As I mentioned earlier, the hammers and sears are the same between Mark II's and III's. Creating a more positive engagement angle will increase the trigger pull weight.
