HF Wooden Machinist Chest

Post by charlesb » Fri Feb 24, 2012 1:40 pm

The Harbor Freight wooden machinists chest is a good value...

- But if you rub a little Tru-Oil on it, it will look at least twice as good.

It really made a difference on mine.

That's the one I had in mind.

I use mine for machinist tools, but my wife bought one for her hobby tools.

The finish on mine was a bit lackluster. I was walking by with a patch soaked in Tru-Oil one day, heading for the trash can with it, and decided to rub a little onto the chest instead.

It made a noticeable difference, bringing out the shifting 'honey' tones in the wood, and giving it a bit of sheen. Later on, it got another thin coat.

I ended up taking the handle off of the top of mine, so I could lay my little netbook computer or a Kindle on top of it, and view a drawing or reference chart, etc. while I am working with one of the machines. The chest is on a steel roll-away cart, so I can move it around the shop.
