ARs

Post by toyfj40 » Sat Mar 14, 2009 12:59 am

I know I am "late to the party", but I'm getting the itch to
consider building an AR...
I've Google'd a lot and watched the nice set of Brownells step-by-step videos.

It seems that dang-near all the web-sites that discuss "building"
are focused on the .223rem (or 5.56 )... other calibers are listed.
but... other than the 'cartridge path'...
are the AR parts interchangeable to a .308win caliber ?

No, I'm not interested in M16 or M10 or NATO-chambers...
but would consider a .223rem "AR" project that could lead
to a .308win "AR" also... as a second rifle (no shared parts, just knowledge)

I don't seem to know the right Keywords for Google...
or am I missing something... ?

This was my problem when I was looking to build one. Too much info, so much it's hard to sift through. I was seriously considering building one in .308 since that's what I already have, but then I stumbled across a great deal on a .223 M4 from Rock River so I jumped on it. Then I looked into reloading .223, is can be done for less than $.20 a round, so it will really become cheap to shoot.
If you find yourself in a fair fight your tactics need work.

I'm thinking about getting a lower receiver before the next ban! Just in case I ever want one. :)

thanks for the prompt responses...
I found http://www.AR10t.com/
it seems that DPMS, Armalite and RockRiver
all make AR-10s in .308win
and price is... well, as expected.

but they do not seem to be the "kit", BYOR as is 'ar-15'...

(if you have a lot of Will-Power... look at the Armalite 30m308 )

... to rePhrase my original post...
a. I am considering a .223 "ar-15 kit"
b. I want(ed) to consider a .308 "ar-10 kit" after that...
but it just does not seem to be the "kit environment"...

and yes, if the budget permits, I'd consider getting "lowers" soon...
and likely the 'core parts'... as the stocks, hand guards, sights etc
would hopefully be obtainable...

You might consider getting some quality magazines if you can find them at a decent price. Good ones have been pretty scarce lately, but we just got some C-Products 30 rounders for $12.50 ea. 44Mag.com had them a couple of days ago.

there are many "repositories" for the Military-Field manuals...
here is one, from an AR site...

http://www.CombatSimulations.com/ar15/specs.htm
(scroll to the bottom of the page for the .pdf links )

for 'Mags'... again there are many
it seems that http://www.MagPul.com/
has some that are well rated...

First, you need to decide between AR15 as in .223 or AR10, which is longer and takes the .308 family cartridges. For an 1st build, may I recommend building an AR15 as it'll be cheaper, and the options are limitless. Buy a good lower to start with, it's kind of hard to buy a poor made 1 at this time.

Now you have to decide exactly which way you want to go with your build. It's vitally important to decide how you want to build it, and what your planned use will be in order to avoid buying excessive duplicate parts. In other words, it wouldn't pay to buy a parts kit with front sight, skinny barrel, and clamshell forend if you're wanting an bull barrel with free float tube and intend to be scoped only. Also do you want single stage or 2 stage trigger? Flat top or A2 style? Sit down and figure out what it'll be used for. What optic are you going to mount on it if any? Also are you going to hunt with it, plink, defense, or possibly all?

I'm NOT trying to confuse you but trying to help you make intelligent decisions that will avoid you buying more parts later. Feel free to pm me or email me and I'll be glad to assist you in any way I can. Neil
