Hi Everyone,

I'm pretty new to the centerfire game. I've got a few 30-30's plenty of shotguns, and rimfires.... but I'd like to start playing around with something more accurate and fun.

I'm considering a .223 bolt action model 700 with a 20 barrel.

I see that it has a 1:9 twist rate. What bullet weights can I expect to shoot accurately withthis sort of twist?

I'm shooting the 62's to 80's with a high degree of accuracy through mine with the 1-9 barrel. My service rifle really likes the 77's for the short lines and the 80's for slow fire.

my savage hates 52gr stuff, likes 69gr stuff, and im about to try some 75gr stuff.

I shoot a National Match RRA's 223 rifle 9" twist in a league (or try to anyway),
and I have found that the 69gr HPBT seems to be the most accurate. It's a Sierra Match style.
I also find the Hornady 75g Match HPBT shoots very well. With a scope, 4x14 power,
I can keep half inch MOA groups. I have tried 55gr bulk ammo without much success.
Maybe a match 55gr would be more accurate then the bulk.
Good luck,

I've had no luck with the lighter 55's through the 1-9 or 1-7 barrels. This is especially true for shooting reduced sized 600yd slow fires at 200 yards. The twist rate is just too fast for those little bullets. They will not stay inside the smaller target rings on the reduced target. The heavier bullets fly straight and true.

Not only have I experienced negative results with 55g thru 9" twist, everybody
I talk to seems to relate the same experience. If you want accuracy with a 9" twist barrel,
I like the range BE gave with 62 to 80g. Brass sorting and powder charge are very important, needless to say.
