Recently bought an XD and love the way it shoots but the slide is real tough for my wife to pull. Are weaker springs available and what # should be used for factory rounds and for +P rounds? Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum!

The springs in your XD-45 are #18 from the factory. You can get a couple of reduced sizes #14 and #16. Brownell's carries these replacement kits http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/Store/ ... px?p=20224

Corbon makes some good +P rounds in 45ACP. There's also a #20 spring for your XD if you're planning on shooting some of these high velocity rounds. The #18 pound spring should work all right but if you plan on shooting a lot of these then the heavier spring kit may be better to reduce stress on the pistol.

Unfortunately auto pistols and recoil springs are typically a tough thing for the smaller female hand to manage. The XD has relatively small slide gripping surfaces and that doesn't make it any easier for a petite hand. Can she manage the "left hand over the top of the slide" technique? Sometimes this works better for the female hand as the slide is being pulled into the hand rather than away from it this way. Here's a link from a female shooting author that explains the do's and don'ts better http://www.corneredcat.com/RunGun/rack.aspx Kathy posts on several gun forum boards and is good at helping encourage female shooters.

Hope this helps.
