Trigger Job, S&W 686

Hi

I am going to do a "trigger job" on my 686 revolver. I ordered a spring set from Wolff. It comes with "type 2" main spring and 3 rebound springs, 13, 14 and 15 lb springs. How do I know which is the best rebound spring to use with this main spring?

You're about to find out why I don't like to do very much work on revolvers. Tuning a revolver takes a whole bunch of tweaks to get right and its usually more than just changing out the springs. Not to mention a whole slew of tools not useful on auto pistols. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/cid=481/ ... lver_Tools

First let me suggest that you get this book before starting your spring change: Kuhnhausens S&W Revolver, A Shop Manual. Midway has it for $24 http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?p ... ber=314178 If you already have it then your off to a good start. Next, if you plan on replacing this rebound spring in your S&W then this tool may take some of the frustration out of it http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=774/ ... PRING_TOOL You can make one of these with a screwdriver ground down in the middle as long as the slot is wide enough to clear the pin and deep enough to push the spring off the pin. The Brownells tool tool is bent and cut at the right angle for use in your S&W pistol. The Brownells tool is better way to go, that way you won't lose a spring or marr your frame. The rebound springs are there to help you get the trigger pull a little lighter and to get a positive sear reset after each shot. This means experimenting between the three rebound springs in the kit as revolvers are finicky, one spring may work one way in one pistol and not the same in another, that is why the Wolff S&W spring kit comes with three rebound springs. You should also first try the pistol with the factory rebound spring installed and just change out the mainspring with the lighter Wolff one. You may find that the pistol operates fine just like that and you don't have to mess with changing the rebound spring at all. The idea is to get the best double-action trigger pull with a smooth, fast, positive reset every time.

Thanks Bullseye, I plan on polishing some spots on the hammer, trigger and lock system and replacing the springs.
