Previously, I posted this as a result of "underloading".
I personally think now that it was a double load.
I since have changed my reloading tactics and have
added safety checks to my routine. I now "scan" each
round after it has been charged, 2-3 times. It was a good
learning experience.

Haka if you are that worried about the doublecharge or no charge situation, you might try one of these on your progressive press...

Good reviews on it, but I have a single stage press. Thanks for your reply. Today I had a weak detonation, but nothing drastic. It sounded like a half load. I check the load level, double check, and check again. Maybe a bad primer. I had to put a plastic chaser down the barrel of my S&W 6" barrel to see if the bullet had cleared, and it did. All the other rounds performed well.

not a good feeling when you hear "bang, bang, pop" not good at all....

That may be better than rapid succession bang, bang, pop, bang....

The more I think about this incident, the more I'm convinced that it was either a weak brass or an underload. It's easier to underload than overload in a progressive press. Underloading is the error the press can make for whatever reason: powder-flow problem, not fully cycling the press, etc. Overloading is the wrong powder measure setting or double-loading from a repeat half-cycle.

I Agree with you on the under loading on a progressive press, Iuase a single stage. I also use either Green Dot or Unique in my .38's and .45ACP's the powder is quite bulky and if you did double load. I don't think you could get the bullet i nas it will fill the case.
