I got a S&W 1911 and a few questions.

Post by Z400ACDC » Sat Apr 02, 2011 10:53 am

Hello friends!
I have had so much fun with my .22 rugers that it has started me wanting other nice pistols. I have always LOVED the look and feel of the 1911. We my fatherinlaw made me a great deal on his "like new'' S&W 1911 ss, I had to give it a try. It shoots good but, it is to heavy for me a carry gun. It will be my side arm around our property and maybe a bedside pistol. Ok, I need a low price owb holster. How often do you need to replace the springs? What do you think about aftermarket triggers?

I normally replace recoil springs every 3000-5000 rounds depending on weather it is hardball or target loads; firing pin springs, and hammer springs..never, at least so far. My main wad gun has seen over 40,000 rounds and minimum of 100,000 dry fire cycles and still has the original firing pin and spring I had a spare firing pin and extractor fitted when I had the gun built and have never needed either.)

Aftermarket, depends on the stock trigger and who fits the aftermarket set. The only three pistols I haven't replaced triggers on, were my kids MKII, Colt officers model 1911(carry gun) and a Legacy Sports 1911 (very nice out of the box, and the cheapest 1911 I've ever bought).

Good acquisition on the S&W. While I've not shot one, I've heard excellent reports.

FWIW

Holster for the S&W 1911

Post by Coach1 » Mon Apr 04, 2011 12:49 pm

There are more 1911 OWB holsters available than one can count. Your
only attribute of "inexpensive" is also not helpful. Holsters are as diverse
and subjective as there are people to carry them, Of course there are
really inexpensive nylon ones that work very well. Kydex holsters are
typically more expensive .. but many good ones are well below $50.
Leather holsters range from small, generic that are relatively cheap to
some very nice, customs that carry appropriate price tags. I will offer
here that Triple K makes good quality leather holsters that are affordable
and should last you a long time. I use one with my Ruger 22/45 MK III.

Here is a Cabellas Bargain Cave reference for consideration.
Enjoy the 1911 and be safe out there.
This one has a built-in pouch for an extra magazine and a snap retention strap.

One thing for sure, if you want a huge choice of holsters and grips, buy a 1911 or a J-frame.
