Remington's new R-51

Post by charlesb » Fri Jan 03, 2014 2:59 pm

I'm excited about the new R-51 soon to be released by Remington, it looks outstanding to me.

This is no boxy piece of junk with a staple-gun trigger. - It's the real article.

Price is right, too. - You get twice the gun for about half the price.

Want.

Many features I like:
Grip safety
Decent sights
9x19
Slim
Single action
Reports of a good trigger

Few I don't (possibly none) :
??

Looks a bit goofy, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that most modern pistols look alike. I'll take some styling, even if it goofy.

===

Also want an old rem 51, for my collection of odd 32s - will keep eyes peeled at gun shows for one.

This looks like one of those guns that will become popular if it truly lives up to this review. You may want to get one when they first come out, as I don't see these staying at that low price point for very long. The streamlined exterior is a very attractive design feature.

I'm digging the looks of it. It's interesting to see Remington getting back into the handgun market, they seem to be bringing good products out with their fairly nice 1911 s and now this pocket pistol.

Manufacturers go where the money is, and people are currently buying more handguns over long guns. Remington couldn't stay on the sidelines too long and still be a competitive firearms manufacturer. I like that they aren't cloning the current compact technology just to get a pocket pistol of their own out in the marketplace.

I've been pretty happy with my engraved Ruger LC9... It will be interesting to see how the new gun compares with the Ruger.

They both do pretty much the same thing, just a little differently.

Looks good. Might be worth looking at as a replacement for the LC9.

It doesn't look like these will hit the shelves until mid-February. Remington really wanted to announce these new pistols at the Shot Show but some of the beta testers "Let the Cat out of the Bag". That forced them to go ahead and make a formal announcement about the R-51.

That MSRP works for me.

I'll test it alongside my PPS & PF9.

Cool move getting guns/molded copies out to holster makers, too.

Mag MSRP $30
Replacement grip panels $20-30
... smart moves by Remington.

I'm not really needing another 9mm carry gun - but I'm going to set some funds aside for an R-51 anyway. - It looks like it may serve as a decent plinker, a weak point with my LC9 on account of its trigger.

Looks like it might make a "lightweight' stand in for my XD. Have to have one in my hand to know though.

I was reading a discussion of Glocks single-stack .380, the model 42 - and the discussion rapidly ended up being about the Remington R-51 instead.

There's a lot of buzz about the R-51 now, Remington has already "sold" thousands of this gun which has yet to hit the market, including one for yours truly.

If it winds up being buggy Remington will be taking a big hit, so here's hoping that its ready for prime-time when they start showing up in the stores.

The introduction is being pushed ahead of schedule, which can be a problem as a design is one thing, and setting up production of a design is another thing altogether.

The MSRP started out at $380 +/- and since the SHOT Show it has already jumped to around $420. By the time it hits the dealers it will probably raise even more. I figure you will pay $450-$475 to take one home.

That is more in line with the retail unit price I had in mind of a pistol of this style/quality. If it becomes popular the price will elevate even further. Expect to see these in your local shops around June.

That sounds good to me... I already have an LC9 and am working on two rifle projects that ought to keep me busy until then.

I kind of expect the R-51 price to peak out soon after it becomes available and then moderate somewhat after the initial rush is all done.
