the itty bitty ones do bite a bit in 40... so do the super light J frame .357's. altough my XD Sub compact isn't bad to shoot at all.

I don't think recoil is an issue in a SD shooting its not much more than a hot 9 anyhow.

My Glock 29 in 10mm had brisk recoil, but it wasn't painful to shoot.

Practicing, I usually fired a magazine-load at a time with no ill-effects. The worst part was tracking down the empties so I could reload them, it really flung them away hard.

Once I fired a Charter Arms snubby in .38 special though that bit my hand, despite the fairly mild cartridge. It was very light and had a tiny grip, definitely a self-defense only gun as it was no fun to shoot. My future wife fired two rounds through it, and handed it back to me. She didn't want anything to do with it, after that.
