Hello, from the sportsman state Louisiana! First of all I am a new member and thought I would start a new topic. I have 2 really nice hunting rifles, and need something that I wouldn't be so worried about scratching, or putting in the weather.

Looking for suggestions? I saw a Mossberg 4x4 Laminate stock in .270, which I heard was a step up from the atr100. I'm also interested in a savage.

Any thoughts

Welcome to Guntalk-Online!

I'm sure that someone will be happy to make some useful suggestions. What are you planning to hunt with these rifles? It can make a difference in recommendations.

Whitetails! Thats prety much what we hunt. Like I said earlier I have a Remington cdl sf 300wsm, and a Tikka 270 wsm, and frankly, on a Cops salary I would hate to to beat and bang either one of those guns while in the woods.

I hunt almost every weekend during the season, which is approximately 2mths (Rifle season). So just need some imput for a gun with a lower price point?

Welcome to Guntalk-Online.

What range do you need to shoot. I know white tail vary greatly in size, what is the avg in your area? Here in Texas it can vary from heavy bush to long range, with dear running from very small to 130#. A Win 30-30 makes a good brush gun.

Well, for starters I hunt large hard wood bottoms on the eastern side of Louisiana, which provides for a 25yrd - 125yrd shot. I also have several Pipe lines on the property which can give me a 350yrd shot.

Not to mention I have some relatives who invited me to come to west Texas for the next few years for a hunt!. So I guess It varies. I just need something in the $500 range for an everyday type weapon.

Again I hunt alot and would hate to damage any of the above listed rifles. For some folks it wouldnt matter, but for a Cop! their my prize possesion's and my wife's worst thought Lol.

So I have looked at both the Mossberg 4x4 and the Savage, and just cant make up my mind on either one! does anybody know anything about either brand?

for the $$ its hard to beat a Savage, i have a Pre accu-trigger in 308 that shoots a little over MOA at 100 with handloads and was cheap enough that if it gets a little beat up I won't cry...

Well guys, despite the popular opinion, I went with the Mossberg!. The stock is what got me, It really stands out (Laminate). I put a Nikon 3x9x40 just to keep the price where my other half wanted to be.

Thanks for the input

How has the Nikon 3-9x40 worked out for you? - I've been very happy with mine, and prefer it over another scope I have that cost three times as much.

sorry so long to reply! I love my Nikons. I have one on a Tikka in 270 short mag, and obviously on this gun. I think for the price point you cant beat them
