Looking for suggestions on replacement sights for my MKIII Hunter. I bought the KMKIII678H because I liked my ability to see the front sights. However, for hunting stationary black or red dots on a bright sunny day, I seem to do better with pistols with standard sights. In particular, the range I use will have a bright morning sun on the target and it makes getting a good sight picture difficult. I tried smaller light pipes and changing colors with a little success.

If I get Ruger sights, I believe I will need a rear sight blade and front sights. I'm not opposed to getting sights from a third party.

Choices:
Standard Ruger bull barrel front sight and rear blade
Ruger target sights and rear blade (GC model)
Third Party Sights??

I called Ruger and ask for a blade front sight that would fit the MK III Hunter. and the BLADE for the rear sight... That is what I installed

Rob, I have acoule of front sights off my P512's and tthe P8GC and I would be willing to sned you one. one has a short base adn 2 have teh long base. Wil measure them later this morniong and e mail yoiu a pic and the heighth measurement .Also update you on the Gander project and my trips to th doctor.

Ruger told me that you can put the iron sights on the Hunter that are on the Competiotion model.
They are $7.50 for the front and $1.50 for the rear.
I think I might switching to these at some point unless I go with a red dot.

I forgot to look at the sights on the new Competition model the last time I was at the range which by the way was the first time I shot the Hunter model that I have with the new VQ sear. Nice....
Looking at the Ruger site and looking at the competition model it looks like the sights that ruger would sell me (refer to above post) are pretty high in profile. I didn't think to ask about differant style blades that might be offered.
Is this the only blade sight that will work or will other lower profile blades work as you refered to in your previuos post?
I put a post under rimfire pistols but no responces asking other ideas of blades for this gun.
I also took out the hi vis light pipe and looked through the, now open hole and was wondering if this would work....

The HiViz sight is the same height as the ones you see on the competiton model. I will use the HiViz or theoriginaly sigh on my {512's or my P8/GC and they are all the same height. Looking through the hole in the front sigh will be just like using a lower height sigh and make the gun shoot higher.

I know what you mean by looking through the hole and the gun will shoot high if you have sighted the gun in with the hi vis optic being/holding just below your point of aim.
I sighted in the gun (per the manual) with the hi vis covering the target. That is why it is covering my point of aim.
This is also why I thought that looking through the empty hi vis bracket would work since it is sighted in looking at the end of the hi vis light bar being my point of aim.
Seems to me the top of the bracket of the hi vis sight is not a good object to use to sight in using traditional sight pictures.
Good news about the ruger competition sight height being the same as the hi vis.
Seems to me, unless I hear or read elsewhere that the competition model sights might be the best option unless looking through the itsy bitsy empty hi vis optic hole works.

Years ago ther were some aperture hooded targets sights on rifles, try it you might like it and keep us posted on the results. Good luck

I am getting ready to try a set of third party sights, the "finer sight" method that used to be available as a webpage online. I printed it out, and that is a good thing, because when I went looking for it right now to leave a link in this post, it isn't there anymore. Anyone else remember that page? It had all of the part numbers and everything that you would want to know about doing a front sight build up to have something very similiar to rifle sights on your MK series pistols. I ordered the parts from Brownells, and after they get here and I get them installed, I will post a link to a picture of them along with the basics of their install and part numbers.

I have got to get it on your board. It was a replacement dovetail base for the front sight, with a millet dot style insert. Then a new rear sight blade with a shallow v-notch and vertical alignment mark. Very similiar to the sight picture on a factory 10/22. After using my sons 10/22 last weekend, I dug up the paperwork that I printed out on this sight replacement. If his bone stock 10/22 can snap off empty 12g shotgun shells at 25yds, using that type of sight, then this should highly accurize my open sight MK's. I ordered one set up, it ran about 33 bucks (not all of the order was for sight though, I also ordered some 1.25 bushings, and some other junk). As soon as I get to work tomorrow, I will dig out the papers again and post what the original author had put together, and as soon as I get the sights in, I will post a range report.

That looks just like the one that I printed out, only the one that I printed out also had the part numbers to use if modifying a 10" ruger MKII. Other than that, I think it is probably the same article. Thanks Bullseye.

They are the same, I just wish I had the pictures. I'd repost the article. I sent an email to him - hopefully he will get it. Looks like he severed ties with his web access company and his email address is the same provider. Who knows, we'll just have to wait and see.
