Upcoming Ammo Shortage?

Not sure why DHS needs 450,000,000 rounds of ammo. Wonder who they are going to war with.

I keep thinking about buying something in .40, but I'd hate to compete with the Feds for store-bought bullets. Time to stock up on reloading supplies?

Agencies over reacting what caused some of the shortages in ammo last elections. Local police departments saw there was a run so they placed their yearly demand budget on one order instead of their normally monthly purchases. Not thinking that military and law enforcement gets there's first.

40 is 1 caliber I don't have. I have enough reloading supplies to reload for 2 yrs at my current consumption. If cut back I can probably go 3 yrs. So I'm set.

how many agencies/agents are under the homeland security umberlla?

I'm sure there are quite a few. plus they probably get a buk discount for ordering so much at once.........

most places I know don't order ammo month to month. they get their budget and order what the project the need for training and replacement of duty ammo and make a big order. it adds up when you have to train all sworn, reserve, court, etc etc personell you are authorizing to carry under your authority. AND issue duty ammo for

Secret Service, US Coast Guard, ICE, Border Patrol, TSA, and Customs. to name a couple, i bet they go through a bit of ammo in training/qualifications.....

Well, I believe you need to get your share so you can keep up with your training. Is there a grant program? After all, I've heard a rumor that some folks are so dedicated that they will train during their spare time. DHS should make the ammo available for such dedication.

Divide that number by five years and you're left with an allowance of 9 million rounds per training year. Now that may seem like a high number but when you think about all the departments and agencies grouped into DHS that figure doesn't appear all that astronomical. Plus the article doesn't specify how that total number of ammo is partitioned for the various calibers.

With regard to the .40S&W, the article seems to indicate that the rounds DHS is getting are the Federal HST.

That round is already very limited for civilians, I've only ever seen a couple boxes of it at gun stores. I was told that the regular retailers only ever get the overflow HST, so I am not sure that would have much impact. Granted, the HST's probably share some production equipment with the other rounds (like the cases), so it's possible it could stifle the availability of other Federal .40 stuff. I'm sure CCI, Winchester, ect, would be happy to fill the void though.

I looked at out city contract with Winchester. It calls for a certain number of rounds to be delivered each month, not in lump sum. This is for storage reason most dept do it this way. It helps both parties when it comes to storage.

I don't quite think this is paranoia run wild but rather a something to "watch for trend-line" type of problem: Mindful of neither ascribing to malicinousness nor to that which is simple innocent ignorance, that which is stupidity... nor ascribing to that which is stupidity that which is malicious I suggest a watchfulness in this trend-line indice that our "government" is buying-up much more than just 450 million rounds of.40 munitions from the civilian market...they are also positioned and positioning to buy-up all, (from .22 on up) munitions production again with open-ended indefinite lifetime purchase orders. Is the"government" message here: you keep your guns and gun rights _We'll keep all the ammunition... nullifying each of you, your guns and your gun rights. There are some very powerful individuals that have not ceased, nor do they plan to, to nullify America by any means possible, for their one-world government.
