Black Powder Originalist

A fellow at the range let me fire a couple of rounds out from his "new" Navy .58 cal horse pistol. What a hoot!

This guy is really into "originalist" shooting. Makes his own bullets, black powder, tans his leather, etc. Showed me a .40 cal flintlock he is building. Gorgeous curly maple stock. Sure is something tempting to try. I'm not sure I'm up to the whole originalist thing, but building a flintlock sure is tempting.

If our new government has anything to do with it, that may be our only form of shooting sports. :( Wouldn't hurt to get back to our roots - just in case.

Years ago I had a Navy Arms replica with the brass frame in .45 cal and it was a fun shooter. Just a little of a pain to load, the caps would not always fire either adding to the bother. Did not put grease over the loaded balls all the time and once it did flash fire the one behind the barrel and at least on next to the barrel, very exciting as I remember. The best way to clean it was lots of hot soapy water, but Ma made me do that in the back yard as it sure made the house smell bad for a while, only did that once. I am easily trained.
