someone left several NRA-RifleMan magazines at the range-room...
I was browsing thru some and thought this might be of some interest.

Question: It seems like the .22 short and other .22 rimfire cartridges
have been around forever. Can you tell me when the various .22 rimfires
were invented?
Answer: The rimfire cartridge was patented by Louis Flobert in Paris,
France, in 1845. Early gun designers using the rimfire principle were
Peabody, Vetterli, Werndl, Spencer and Henry.
This explains why no basic patents were taken on rimfire ammunition
by Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson when they introduced the
Model 1 tip-up revolver and the .22 Short rimfire cartridge in 1857.
Introduction dates for .22 rimfire cartridges are summarized as follows:
1845 - BB Cap.
1857 - Short
1871 - Long
1880 - ExtraLong
1887 - LongRifle
1888 - CB Cap.
1890 - Winchester RimFire
1903 - Winchester Auto
1914 - Remington Auto
1959 - Winchester Magnum Rimfire
1977 - Ultra High Velocity
