I stopped by a neighborhood yard sale a couple of weeks ago and found a pistol scope for a real bargain (I'd probably buy bubonic plague if I thought I was getting a bargain). Figured it would be a no-brainer to mount it. Stopped by a local sporting goods store and bought a set of Burris rings. Couldn't get them on the rail. Took it back and the clerk couldn't mount the scope with any set of rings and had to leave it at the store. Picked it up today. Didn't have time to try it. But it looks OK. The rings didn't quite double the cost of the scope.
Leupold M8-4X. I didn't want the rear sight removed and may look for some slightly taller rings. Any suggestions?

It is amazing what can be found at a yard sale. I have picked up quite a few good deals by just walking around and seeing what's for sale. One time I bought a real nice Beeman P-1 pellet pistol for a song at a yard sale in California.
There's a good story about that find. This little worried looking guy points out the zipper rug in a pile of stuff and says, "Danger!" So I feign shock and say thanks for the warning. I walk around the yard sale for awhile, until he left, then I went back over to the rug and discovered that inside of it is the Beeman. I asked the owner for the price, it was real good one, I could hardly contain myself as I grabbed for my wallet, I didn't even dicker the price. Then the owner told me that it also came with a bunch of maintenance related kits. Thanks to the little frightened man, otherwise that one probably would have gotten away from me because I hadn't seen the gun case in the pile of stuff, and even if I would have, I had no idea there was a pellet pistol inside of it. The case just looked empty and really I didn't need another zipper rug. Now I have a great shooting pellet pistol for my indoor range.

Sounds like a story I hears while we were struggling with the rings and scope on Saturday. Guy said he found a leather rifle case at a yard sale for $35. Picked it up and found it contained an almost new 30-30 lever gun inside. Did a couple of the "are you sure" questions before plunking down the money.
I don't know if I will like shooting the pistol with a scope, but this won't cost that much to find out. Came with original box. The original price tag on the box was $215. I didn't ask the guy how long he had it.

The plus side is the scope doesn't need batteries, just daylight.

I keep an extra set of batteries in my range bag because I've never put a red dot up without turning it off. Well, almost never.
Looking forward to taking it out and see if it will help me get my groups down to P225R15.

I keep extras too. You never know when those little suckers are going to give out on you. Mr. Murphy is alway vigilant so he bears close watching and careful preparation to fend him off.

Very nice find Greener. Have you tried a set of Weaver rings yet? I use their medium rise rings on two of my rifles, they are relatively light, sturdy, and I can still see my iron sights under them. I think that they run about $20 at Wally world. Might be worth looking at if your in there any time soon.
Side note, just tried a set on my MKIII factory base, and they fit no problem.

I'll take a look at them. I tend to switch between red dots and open sights and would like to avoid having to reinstall and rezero the rear sights if I decide I want to shoot without the scope.
A better idea would be to have duplicate pistols, one with scope and one without. Think I'll check my insurance coverage and pass that one by SWMBO.

Song Dawg Like!
Those darn Burris rings are great but more than once I've had to do a tweak job on them to get them to go. ...and it "ain't" the rail! I've got many Power Custom and Weaver rails that I've had fits fittin'!

I like that solution better too, pistols set up for individual uses. Only problem is the addiction factor. I started with one, and now have four and am working my way into a MKII blued 10". Now I use the argument "collection" but I don't know how long the boss is going to buy that. Best of luck!

jjfunk,
"Collection" has a certain responsible quality to it. You're thinking of the value aspects. It's your responsibility to secure that MKII
I think you can get quite a bit more mileage from that one!

Nice looking scope, I'd like to have one like that. Looks good on the gun too!
Can you put a shim under the mounting rail, to raise it up a bit? You'd need longer screws, but that's easy. I'd just be concerned about the stress on them.
But if it's small enough, it probably wouldn't be too much.

I agree with it being a "responsibility". I am going to be building up a 6" pac-lite to trade for it, but it is still worth it for me, just because I can't get a 10" any other way.

Been thinking about that solution. The other is to try a different style of rings. After all the messing around, I think I'll shoot it and then decide what to do. Before I decided to put the scope on it, I had a Bushnell Trophy red dot on it. I may do some changing of rings and try that.
