Old Guy Status
I guess I've made "old guy" status. This afternoon I heard that I was referred to as an "old guy" and a "nice older gentleman."
The nice older gentleman was used by the two ladies who shot my revolvers.
The old guy was a mentioned by range member to another about an old guy raising hell with the range owner. He came in just as I was raising holy hell about a guy who was pointing his 10/22 at me as I was coming up from putting targets up. I had ask him if the range was cold so I could put up targets, he said yes. As I was coming back he was waving a rifle in my direction. I motioned and told him to put it down, then expressed my displeasure on having a rifle pointed at me. He said he was "just putting it up" and responded to my "and I bet it was unloaded, huh?" with "yes."
If he had said "I'm sorry, I forgot" I wouldn't had gotten a bit hot. But, yes, I was more than a little PO'd by the cavalier response.
So, today I made old guy status. Or angry old guy status.

We'll all get off your lawn now.
Good for you on making that guy's screw-up memorable. You probably got that lesson to stick better than you would have by being polite. If anyone else needing the same instruction hammered home was in earshot, you probably saved them future embarrassment.
Hot range / Cold range is pretty damn simple.
I don't fully endorse the 'don't touch ANYTHING on the table' version, but the "no handling boomsticks" version is 100% supported here and on my range.
Load mags, reset targets, get a drink, adjust eyes/ears, whatever - but leave the guns alone until everyone is back behind the firing line and all agree on a hot range again. Simple, safe, concise.
(the officious little twit that got in my face for picking up trash near the bench at the silly range in L.A., however, can get bent - apparently angelenos need adult supervision to handle their approved non-assault-weapon bench rest guns)

I've noticed that it seems whether we are "old" or not depends on who is doing the evaluation. The younger they are, the more likely we are "old".
The Lolita types, that drool over guys 2-3 times their age, worry me though.
