22/45 replacement grips?

Post by rht0930 » Sun Jun 17, 2007 9:08 am

Hello All,
I am the proud owner of a Ruger MkIII, 22/45 Target and Hunter models.
Is there a source for replacement grip panels with a thumb rest and with or without finger grooves?
Have a GREAT DAY!!

Welcome Ron!

Your 22/45 is a one piece molded plastic grip frame, there are no current replacement grips for it. There have been folks who've ground off the factory molded ones and inserted screw estuchens for adding replacement grips. I'll post a link to one site in a second. But if you decide to do this mod, be careful to drill holes in the grips for the 22/45 sear and hammer pivot pins, otherwise you won't be able to remove them without taking the grips off the pistol.

Thanks for the response, Bullseye.
Looks like a little more than I want to tackle at this time. I thought it would be an option to help with arthritis problem.
I think I will concentrate on the trigger, sear, etc first.
Have a GREAT DAY!!

I would like to do the 1911 grip mod on my new 22/45 MKIII and I have a couple of questions. Which size grip panels do you use? I like the look of the standard Gov. model flat bottomed 1911 grip better or does it have to be the Officers model size. Secondly, how does the Ruger echelon that is on the grip frame come off, does it just pry off? I don't see any screws from the inside of the magwell.
Thanks

Those panels do not come off they have to be ground off with a milling tool. This is a major undertaking that does permanent damage to the frame. Go to the link in this thread a few posts earlier and view the steps for modifying the frame.

The officer sized panels are more the proper size for the 22/45 frame but the larger ones can be used if they are modified for the proper length.
