MKIII.org question
Is it just me or did Mark III.org just dry up? There hasn't been a new member there since mid July. I've been monitoring postings and there's been very little activity over there in the last month and a half. Am I missing something? I've sent a few PM's to Rook lately but I've heard no responses.

I check in there a few times a day as well, and it is too bad, cuz like you said, it has almost dried up. For a while there it was back up to speed, and I started posting there again, but it seems kinda quite over there now. Maybe people just don't know that it is still there, plus it still times-out an awful lot. Too bad. I learned a good bit over there, and in fact it was the website that got me back into shooting rimfire. I hope it re-surfaces soon. The more resources available the better, right? I hope that Rook is OK too.

Activity over here has been picking up, and I'm enjoying the extra discussions but I'd hate to see Mark III.org vanish into oblivion. Perhaps it's just a response to the long delays in accessing the server. I've got a lot of time in over there and I really don't want it to die on the vine. Maybe one of the others has some ideas, or heard something more.

Now if Bullseye could just move all the MarkIII.org posts over here...whoa, would be an awesome resource.
MarkIII is still slower than a one-legged grandma running uphill on ice against the wind.

Yeah, one day MKIII zips right along, and the next it takes like 4 min. to get the forum homepage, even on broadband. Oh well, I am sad to see it drying up, but very glad to have found this forum too. I only found Bullseye's place here after MKIII.org started acting up, so I guess as one good thing leaves me at least one good thing comes to me.

I've been trying to reach Rook to see if there's something he/we could do to fix the speed problem. I had the same webhost provider and too was suffering from continually degrading access speed problems. I changed over to a new webhost and things have been great ever since.
At one time I had all of the data files for Mark II.org as I was assisting Rook in building the new website with the old data files. Ultimately MkIII.org was created and Rook was able to upload all the old postings into the database. I don't believe I have those files anymore and I wouldn't be able to include them without Rook's expressed permission even if I did have them. Even though many of those postings are my own intellectual creations.

Hope he gets the site running better. It has been a great resource. If not, it would be a shame if a lot of the information on the site couldn't go some place like this one.
Guntalk, mostly, and mkiii really have increased my confidence in what I should be able to do with the Rugers and shooting in general.

It's probably not the site... as Bullseye said, the web host is likely responsible for the sluggishness. A router can easily be configured to limit bandwidth to a subscriber and that appears to be what has MarkIII down in the dumps.

That's a good point about bandwidth limitations. That host ISP grew faster than it could handle and there customers are leaving in droves for the same reasons. MKIII.org is using ISP called Globat. If you google Globat reviews and look at customer ratings they're all complaining about the same problem - slow access. Here's an example http://www.webhostingjury.com/reviews/Globat That's why I left them, the system was far too slow.

Good Lord!
I wonder how they manage to even stay in business?
Sounds like the typical over subscription without sufficient bandwidth to cover todays intensive user requirements.
They probably only have a T-1 feed and today that is NOT going to cut it.

When I first started with them they were great, but like the others, the service degraded over time to barely loading. I noticed that my site and MKIII were both very slow but other websites loaded very quickly. I put two and two together and swapped to a new Webhost. I know that Rook was really PO'd at Globat's forced upgrades policy and was planning to switch, but his anniversary has passed now and he apparently didn't move. When I moved to LunarPages the change was immediately noticeable, speed was very fast and their customer service was/is very good too.
If you think back, MKIII.org wasn't alway this slow, it too degraded over time to the point it is now. Mostly the degradation has happened since the beginning of this year.

Yes, I remember when MarkII (at that time) was quite fast.
Hopefully Rook will do the same thing you did as it does not appear that his traffic will increase much with the horrendous lag he now has.
It is too good an information site to let it die off and blow away.
