Judging by your time stamp, you didn't turn into a popsicle last night. I'm guessing you found some of those things you were looking for in those long forgotten storage places because you didn't sign off your last post as "Frosty."

New heating system, coldest night, sounds like the best laid plans went awry. It may be hard to get a service tech out today.

H ey Rob, Greetings from NANOOK of the NORTH and from the oldman and the Bear too. Remember when you lived in Meeeshegan and that stuff did not bother you and then you move South and must have take the course of how to become a WUSS in 3 easy lessons. Right now my back porch is 10.9F according to my remote sensor and indoors it is a BALMY TROPICAL 75F. For once it is colder down in the Sunny South than it is here in the frozen tundra.
Why does a heating system fail when it is very cold, because if the weather was moderate it would not be a real pain in the butt. There is never a good time to have problems, that is why they are called problems. :(
You have great day and shoot straight and may the Good Lord smile on you.

Thinking about logging in as "Frosty." The Service company called and said the tech would call me as soon as he finished his current job. SWMBO is off visiting her parents and doesn't seem to be missing this weekend quality time opportunity. She did seem amused. She did solve the space heater mystery, we didn't need them so she gave them away. I think my price for taking her back just doubled.

My favorite #4 daughter came home for the long weekend but has decided that her apartment in Fredericksburg is warmer than home and is chomping at the bit to return to college. But, oh by the way, my car has been loosing antifreeze, would you hurry up and check it so I can go back to a warmer place? We won't mention that it has been doing it since September and we were home for a month in December and we just remembered it.

When I was a Scoutmaster in Michigan, our November campouts were Wilderness Survival and some of our Jan/Feb campouts were "Polar Bear" weekends (3 days, 2 nights below freezing). Didn't seem bad. Must have been that "dry cold" thing.

Looks like my frozen range trip today is out. Guess I'll go catch up on reloading. Coming in from the outside or the toasty 20°F garage makes the house feel warmer.

Hey FROSTY, did you ever think that maybe it is old age bothering you and not the temp? Us old people are more susceptible to the cold temps and we whine a lot more also.

I feel for you, I got the Polar Bear patch many years ago when the boys were scouts. Like you, I don't plan on earning another one in my own home. Maybe you should think about Motel 6 tonight if that heater doesn't get fixed, they'll leave the light on for you. :D

I have all the Polar Bear patches I need and all the "Go's" in my job book for Practice Being Miserable that I need. My major concern was how long and how cold before it started affecting the uninsulated water piping under the house. The rest I dressed for. I did wimp out on time at the reloading bench in the garage.

Turned out to be a 5-amp buss fuse in the air handler control in the crawl space. It won't take waiting around for a service tech to solve that problem again.

Now that I have my Nanook of Michigan gear located, I plan to spend a relaxing afternoon at the range.

Well then, sounds like you had a relatively toasty night compared to the night before. I didn't think about the pipes. That could have been another nasty situation waiting on another service tech for plumbing. Sounds like it all worked out for you. Have fun at the range!

Well Nanook, Bear and I are glad to know your heat is back on, now you have another bit of knowledge in the old think tank. Why did the fuse blow out? once can be an indication of problems in the future, so keep a couple of spares on hand. If it happens again you may have a real problem. You can get by for quite some time without heat in the house we did for about 4 or 5 days in the early 80's when we had an ice storm and had no power for that time. As far as pipes in a crawl space, a slight flow of water running through them will keep them open in pretty cold temps. Have fun at the range, I have to do snow on the walks and drive. Looks like about 4-6 came during the night no range time for me until nearing Spring, 18F right now but you have to walk through knee deep snow to get to the target stands and you sure do not want to drop anything because the firing line is just about the same.. :D

I had the fuses but didn't have any diagrams of where things were. I also didn't want to give them excuses for voiding warranties. I had some water running, but that trick doesn't always work especially if it is very cold for a long time. Fortunately, Richmond very rarely has extended periods of very cold weather. It's about 35 on the back porch now.

I don't think I'd be all that anxious to go shooting if I had to use a snow blower to get to the range and then clear the lane. My son's range in Kalamazoo is closed because the Christmas thaw left an inch or so of ice on the hilly road and now it's probably covered with a couple of feet of snow.

Rob, if it were that warm heer I would go to the range and wade through the snow for a few rounds at least. Right now my back porch according to my remote temp reader is about 1/2 of that 35F.

Glad to hear that you did not have to work hard to attain that skill.
I was in Texas only once to visit with and spend Christmas with my 2 oldest daughters in Houston. I knew it was a bad omen when the plane we were to fly down on from here in Michigan would not start because of the cold, we got a flight on another airline ad got there a bunch of hours later than we should have. Houston recorded the 2nd coldest temp eve and had rolling blackouts and low to no water pressure for a couple of days. The River Walk in San Antonio must be great when there are people there, the place was deserted as the river was damn near ready to become an ice rink.
This is 950 the next 50 should be easy. :D :D :D
